I bet this is why most of these pumps are failing. Descaling will not get rid of this problem. You have to do it manually & check it every so often. I’ve cleaned mine out twice so far. I had a Cuisinart grind n’ brew and grew tired of the time it took to clean the darn thing because I always like to start every morning with a good, fresh cup o’ joe.
Not having ever brewed with a percolator, but having fond memories of my mother doing it, I decided to take a chance on the Presto because of all the positive reviews. I wasn’t disappointed. I was a little wary that there was no automatic shut-off for the coffee pot because I tend to be a little forgetful and thought I might burn it out if I left for work and forgot to unplug it. I solved that dilemna by purchasing an automatic shut-of timer and used the 2 hour setting.
I also read a few reviews that mentioned using a paper filter to keep the grounds that percolate out of the basket to a minimum. I tried doing that and found that using a filter actually caused more to leave the basket. I’m guessing that the design engineers took it all into account when they designed it. There are very few grounds in the coffee pot just using the basket that came with the pot. I take 2 one qt tea bags, lay them at the bottom of the carafe, and then pour the sugar on top of the bags. If the water doesn’t get hot enough then the sugar doesn’t melt and I’m left with a rock-hard sugar substance on the bottom the the carafe! If the carafe doesn’t clean easily, then it is a mess to take care of. And if it doesn’t turn itself off, then I get burnt tea!
